Welcome to our second article for the upcoming Speed Duel Starter Decks: Destiny Masters and Duelists of Tomorrow. If you missed our first article we recommend that you check it out here. This will explain a bit about Skill Cards and how Speed Dueling works.

The master of the Millennium Eye was an extremely dangerous opponent for Yugi in the original series. In addition to being able to seal souls away in cards, Pegasus could use his eye to see his opponent’s hand and strategically pick apart the opponent’s strategy. He would use this information to taunt them, break their resolve and masterfully crush his opponents.

As you can only use 1 Skill in your deck, deciding which Skill to use becomes a big factor in constructing your Deck for Speed Dueling.

*At the start of the Duel, look at your opponent’s opening hand. You may choose to have that player shuffle their hand into their Deck and draw a new hand. (If both players use a Skill at the same time, the Turn player resolves their Skill first.)

The “Millennium Eye” Skill is extremely powerful in the hands of an experienced Duelist. At the beginning of the game after the opponent draws their cards, this Skill will let you look at their opening hand, then you have 2 choices. If you decide your opponent’s hand is weak, you can memorize it and build your plan around what you have seen. Or if you think their hand is strong, you can make them shuffle it back and redraw a new hand. The trade-off here is keeping the information you have seen to give you an advantage. You won’t get to see the redrawn cards so you must consider carefully which is more important to you in the Duel.

To explain the last part of this Skill, essentially if you have 2 Skills that would meet their activation requirements at the same time and happen to be a Skill that can be used during the opponent’s turn, the order in which you resolve them is turn player, followed by the other player. As no chain is used, fully resolve the turn player’s Skill first then the other player can resolve theirs.

This type of Skill will take a lot of practice to get used to. Once the players begin to figure out the format the power of the information or disruption this Skill offers will be invaluable.

At New York Comic Con, ICv2 spoke with Konami Digital Entertainment Vice President, Card Business Yumi Hoashi, who had details on the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Speed Dueling format launching in January, and showed us both the Destiny Master and Duelists of Tomorrow Starter Decks and the three preconstructed character decks each contains.

The Speed Dueling format ties closely to Konami’s successful Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links video game, and is designed as an onramp for new TCG players.  "[Speed Dueling] is very similar to how the mobile game Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Links plays, Hoashi told us.  "Each person has 4,000 life points. You only have three monster zones, and it’s a 20-plus card deck.  It’s a simpler way to play; it should be great for entry-level players."

"Each Speed Dueling card, although it's the same Yu‑Gi‑Oh! card, will have a logo," she explained.  "It’s like a watermark of the Speed Dueling logo on the card itself. For Speed Duel, you can only use the cards that are geared towards the speed duel.  You can also use your Speed Duel cards in your current TCG deck, if you want."

Konami will support the Speed Dueling format with both boosters and organized play. Additional products are planned through 2019.  "The card count per pack will be more similar to our Star pack, which had three cards per pack," Hoashi said.  "It'll contain cards that'll help the Starter Decks that have already been released.”

"We're looking at our first booster pack to come out in March," she continued.  "Then over the course of the year, we'll be releasing more booster packs, and also more starter decks as well that'll introduce more character decks.  We'll also support it with organized play at the OTS (Official Tournament Store) level, as well as at the premier event level."

Welcome back for another article about our upcoming product Speed Duel Starter Decks: Destiny Masters and Duelists of Tomorrow.

If you missed our first article about how the basics of Speed Dueling and how Skill cards work, please read that article here before reading on.

Ishizu was tasked with guarding the Tomb of the Pharaoh, along with her brother Marik. Eventually Marik did not want to follow this path and unleashed his twisted inner darkness. Ishizu, desperate to save her brother, manipulated Kaiba into launching the Battle City Tournament by giving him 1 of the 3 legendary Egyptian God cards, Obelisk the Tormentor, with the intent to win the card back. Thanks to her Millennium Necklace, Ishizu could see into the future and knew precisely how everything would fall into place. Almost everything went according to plan right up until the moment Ishizu was about to win her Duel against Kaiba, when an unexpected event caused Kaiba to summon his Blue- Eyes White Dragon instead of attacking with Obelisk the Tormentor allowing him to win the Duel. Ishizu learned from that Duel that the future is not written in stone and gave the Millennium Necklace to Yugi.

The “Millennium Necklace” Skill gives you a glimpse into your opponent’s future and allows you to manipulate events to your advantage. Players that have played Advanced Constructed Yu-Gi-Oh! may remember the card Spyral Drone which is a monster that allows you to look at the top cards of your opponent’s Deck and manipulate them. Duelists everywhere quickly saw how rearranging the top of the opponent’s Deck to prevent them from drawing comeback cards was very strong. As a Skill it’s a little different from some that we have shown so far. If you want to build your Deck in a certain way and there are no direct Skills to improve your Deck, this is the type of Skill you could add to any strategy you wanted and use it to set your opponent back. Like Pegasus’s “Millenium Eye” Skill, this is one that will reward experienced players. The key is to know exactly when to use the Skill to capitalize on denying your opponent a particular card they need. A deeper level of this Skill is that the opponent doesn’t get to look at the cards you rearrange, this means you can glean information about what the opponent doesn’t have in their hand to make better decisions. It can be hard to bluff a powerful trap when you don’t know what the opponent saw on top of your Deck.
