我真的觉得这个作品会有点意思

Geometry Wars: Galaxies Hands-on
Who would have thought geometry could be so fun on DS and Wii?
by
Rob Burman, IGN UK

UK, June 28, 2007 - In space no one can hear you scream, apparently. We say apparently because we've never been to space, so we don't know whether our cries would be heard or not. Imagine what it would be like if screams could be heard in space though. Man, after a marathon Geometry Wars session the death throes of the thousands of bad guys you've killed would be ringing in your ears for days to come.

You see, like Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved on Xbox 360 before it there's more death and destruction in Galaxies on DS and Wii than you'd find at a back-to-back screening of the Rambo trilogy. But rather than running through the desert in slow motion and sporting a mullet that's so bad it's good, here you're zipping around vector grids, pumping out lasers and detonating nukes, all in the name of racking up a high score.

Every time we play our DS now, we think about Galaxies.

Of course, the Geometry Wars name - and indeed its gameplay - will be instantly recognisable to anyone who also has an Xbox 360. The game was originally released on Xbox Live Arcade in 2005 and quickly became the gun-toting poster child of Microsoft's downloadable game service, thanks to its simple-but-solid gameplay and the appeal of getting your high score on the global leaderboard. So, if you've played it on 360 you may think you've seen all Geometry Wars has to offer - but you'd be wrong. After shooting our way through the Wii and DS versions we're delighted to report it's more intense, challenging and destructive that even the most hardened Geo Wars nut could have asked for.

Things get off to a great start with the introduction of stages and different planets because, unlike Retro Evolved - which only had one grid and a constant swarm of enemies - Galaxies has a host of levels (or planets as they're called) with different sized grids, new enemies and features such as gravity pools that send shockwaves rippling through the grid, shoving you around as they go. Each planet can be played for an unlimited time, although you players must still take down swarms of bad guys in order to rack up scores high enough to receive a bronze, silver or gold medal, which unlocks more stages. In that sense the introduction of complete levels that are tied together makes Galaxies feel much more like a proper game rather than just a downloadable title.

There are other new additions too, such as the Drone. This AI-controlled, um, drone, follows the movement of your ship and assists in three different ways: firstly, it can be used defensively, by shooting in the opposite direction to where you're firing; it can be used for all-out attack too, doubling your firepower; and finally it can be used to collect Geoms, the small, yellow collectibles left behind by the bad guys which can then be traded for power-ups. And, as you progress, you can upgrade your Drone with better weapons to make it a supreme killing machine.

There's a lot of slowdown at the moment, but it's getting sorted.

Indeed, we were certainly relieved to have the Drone on board when we came up against some of the new enemies in the game. As well as featuring the classic invaders from Retro Evolved, many new terrors make their Geo Wars debut in Galaxies. One of the most dangerous is the Mutator, a squiggly blue monster that zips across the grids towards other enemy ships. Once it has latched onto a bad guy it transforms them into the lethal Mutatehead, a super-fast enemy that locks onto your ship and hunts you down.

Other new features to look out for include spawning pits which shoot out streams of enemies, so unless you quickly take them out the screen fills with more bogies than the nasal cavity of a kid with a cold. Finally, the other new feature we noticed were larger enemies that explode into smaller foes when shot, sending out a small shockwave that knocks your ship backwards. Not only does this give players a real sense of impact from destroying such a large enemy, it also means you're not immediately swamped by smaller enemies following the blast.

However, while these new features are all well and good every self-respecting Geometry Wars will have one answered question - what are the controls like? Well, they're… different. Compared to the 360's twin rotating sticks it's a fair bit trickier to get to grips with the Wii game, because it takes a while getting used to using the Nunchuk to move around and the Wii-mote to aim. Sure, a red laser shows where you're aiming but it's slightly confusing to relate hand movements to the on-screen chaos, right in the thick of the action. There's often the tendency to panic in tricky situations too, and wave your hand about like an excited monkey with a banana. However, with practice and much smaller wrist movements to rotate lasers we were soon dispatching hundreds of enemies without difficulty.

Stylus controls works like an absolute dream. High scores, here we come.

The DS version, on the other hand, was perfectly simple to pick up and start blasting away. Here the D-pad controls movement and aiming is performed with the stylus, while the action plays out on the top screen. Once again there's an aiming reticule to show where you're shooting but this isn't really needed because it's always clear exactly where you're aiming, thanks to the simple stylus control. It's also possible to very quickly change the direction of shots by small movements with the stylus, which is great for carving through waves of enemies. We were more impressed with the instant simplicity of the DS controls, whereas the Wii-mote took a little getting used to.

So, after getting to grips with the single-player, we were ready to try something new - the co-op matches. Here two players join forces on the same grid and are tasked with - unsurprisingly - killing those pesky enemy neon shapes. The camera pans out as each player moves to the extremes of the stage, which works surprisingly well and we never lost track of our ship, even though the action came thick and fast. Despite playing as a co-op game there's still the competitive element to the gameplay, because each player has their own scores and lives. Therefore it quickly becomes a race to see who can take out the most foes - all under the pretext of helping out the other player, of course.

In addition to the co-op mode the finished game will include a versus mode, where players must work against each other to cause the most destruction. Each version of the game will have a console-specific multiplayer game too, although Viviendi wasn't saying exactly what they'd entail.

What the games will include, however, is a comprehensive online leaderboard, for both the Wii and DS versions. In fact each level will have its own scoreboard so players can specialise in one particular level if they choose, or simply play through all the stages to increase their combined overall score. In fact if you own both the Wii and the DS games you can post your combined scores on the Elite leaderboard, the ultimate high score table where the best of the best can proves their skills to their pals.

It's a bizarre but enjoyable feeling playing Geo Wars on DS.

Geometry Wars: Galaxies is shaping up to be a brilliant action-packed shoot-'em-up, then. Graphically the Wii version looks practically identical to its 360 cousin and runs at a smooth 60 frames per second, no matter how many enemies are on screen. Naturally the DS game doesn't look quite as impressive and only manages to trot along at 30fps, but it's great fun nonetheless.

Anyone who was concerned that the Live Arcade version wouldn't make a fully-fledged title can rest assured - Galaxies does everything that Retro Evolved did, but with plenty more bells, whistles and, of course, explosions. The November release can't come soon enough.[/quote]
