[DS]<It's a Wonderful World>体验报告(From IGN Editor)

May 13, 2007 - Language barrier be damned, I made my way to the It's a Wonderful World demo kiosks at the Square Enix Party this weekend, and I'm glad I did -- this Nintendo DS action game's pretty kick-ass even in its still-in-development form.

The strict Japanese text made it difficult to understand the whole story and concept, but the visual style and gameplay speak volumes for the product and made it very accessible for those not willing or able to read through the manga-like character cutscenes and dialogue windows. That's because the game's heavily focused on stylus-swiping action through the city streets of Shibuya (or a very close likeness of it).

In the Square Enix Party demo, players controlled the lead character through the crowded streets and intersections using the stylus on the lower screen -- where the screen was tapped and held the character would run towards that location. The task in the demo was to follow a mysterious cloaked man through the downtown area, and after each conversation with him players jumped into combat sequences against crazy characters such as penguins, crabs, Easter Island heads, and, yes, even some bad-ass kangaroos.

Combat sequences are very combo heavy because players have a variety of different styles of attacks. Quick tapping an enemy, for example, will fire projectiles at him. Swiping the screen up and down over that enemy will bring the character up close and personal for some hand-to-hand. Tapping and holding the stylus on the enemy will charge up an even more powerful attack that will fire off when the stylus is lifted off the screen. The Left or Right shoulder button is used as a modifier that will activate other styles of attacks using the tap, swipe, or tap and hold controls. Each attack only has a set amount of power which will get depleted as they're used, so it's encouraged to mix up all the attacks to not just keep a combo going, but to earn skill points for when the battle's over and you're ranked on how well you did in the fight.

The style and theme is very Jet Grind Radio in execution, featuring a very similar, edgy art direction and a huge focus on hip hop music and the unparalleled Shibuya culture. The designers throw in some really cool effects to really give It's a Wonderful World its own unique feel; traditional 2D effects like background layering is used to give a dynamic 3D look as players work their way through the environments. Characters are also well animated 2D sprites, and the developers keep the energy high by filling the environments with tons of objects, characters, and enemies...and the game never dips or chugs when the going gets rough.

It's a Wonderful World is still heavily in development, but I'm really looking forward to the final build -- it's not the usual Square Enix offering. Hit the media link below to check out the newest batch of screens and check back frequently as the game continues in its development cycle.
