Vulcanus Declares New War
Zepetto blows away its previous plans for an all-new PSP assualt.
November 05, 2004 - Korean developer Zepetto debuted a futuristic mech battler at E3 2004. In the early design, the company planned a game where war was going on all around you, and your mercenary soldier was there to enjoy the spoils of war. A promising concept, but when we had a chance to talk to the team earlier this year, they promised a change in how the battle would play out.
The change is now apparent -- instead of using the future fears of global warming and global strife, Zepetto is turning history back around and twisting it upon itself with an alternative WWII concept fought not with tanks and soldiers, but with gigantic mech suits (similar to Konami's PS2 strategy title Ring of Red.) The memorable battlegrounds of Normandy and Leningrad will see all new forms of combat as the giant mechanical armored units engage in full-scale war.
In addition to a graphical change, Vulcanus for PSP is seeing a number of technical changes as well. The programming team has concentrated on packing in incredible numbers of enemy soldiers onto a battlefield, as is seen in money shot from the new trailer for the game. Network play is also still part of the game design, although the team has downplayed the original concept of an online game -- Vulcanus will support Wireless LAN networking for four players, although 'online' still seems to still be part of the concept in some ways that are not fully clear yet. The game will be released with options for Korean, English and Japanese languages.
Rumor has it that a US publisher may already be involved with this PSP project, so while we'll be keeping an eye out for more progress out of Korea, look for publishers to make an announcement hopefully soon regarding bringing the war of Vulcanus to your nation.
