Nintendo Co. said it is boosting holiday shipments of its new Nintendo DS dual-screen hand-held gaming device to 1.4 million in North America, from the previously announced 1 million, to help alleviate shortages and meet consumer demand for the device.
The ability to increase the shipments for the holidays resulted from higher-than-expected volume at production facilities in China, said George Harrison, senior vice president with Redmond-based Nintendo of America. Nintendo said two weeks ago that it would be able to produce 5 million of the DS units worldwide through March, up from the previously expected 4 million units.
Harrison said the company did not try to keep the initial Nintendo DS supply artificially low to attract extra attention. Whereas reports of shortages can increase the buzz around a product, inadequate supply can also result in lost sales.
'We really just planned conservatively based on what we believed the production capacity was,' Harrison said. 'When the production throughput exceeded our expectations, that allowed us to ship more product.'
The Nintendo DS is a new entry for Nintendo in hand-held gaming, a market already dominated by the company's Game Boy Advance. More than 700,000 of the $150 Nintendo DS devices have been sold in North America since the launch Nov. 21, the company said yesterday. More than 500,000 have been sold in Japan since the launch there last Thursday. |
