The big games that are exciting all the kids on the PlayStation Portable show off the system's powerful 3D graphics and flashy effects, but older gamers with more refined tastes for games of vintage quality won't be left behind. Namco announced early on that would be publishing a version of its Namco Museum series on the PSP, and this week, the company opened the official Namco Museum PSP official site, with details and screenshots of the different games featured in the package.

With just seven Namco titles on the PSP version (and with almost half of those seven being sequels to other games on the disc), Namco is hoping that quality over quantity will win over gamers. Luckily, they're putting an added value in the package that will help to make that argument -- in addition to classic versions of seven of Namco's greatest and most influential hits from the early days, the company has expanded the gameplay of four games with 'Arrangement' versions. These Arrangements remix the classics with brand-new graphic upgrades, improved audio, special multiplayer features, and new gameplay that includes boss battles and other new challenges.
Totaling of eleven games, here's a list of what will be on the PSP Namco Museum in the Japanese release next month:

Pac-Man
Pac-Man Arrangement
Ms. Pac Man
Rally-X
New Rally-X
New Rally-X Arrangement
Galaga
Galaga Arrangement
Galaxian
Dig Dug
Dig Dug Arrangement
For arcade purists, five of the seven classic games have upright vertical mode options, where the PSP is held on its side and played with the controls on the bottom to replicate the taller sideways side of the monitors used in the original arcade games (the two Rall-X games are the only ones that are left normal.) For fun-seekers not so concerned with the purist details, the Arrangement modes all have wireless LAN play for multiplayer gaming.

Pac-Man Arrangement features new stages, boss battles against gigantic ghosts and multiple ghosts, and a cooperative 2-player mode where the players team up to try to progress through the stage, luring ghosts away from each other while collecting as high a score for yourselves. Galaga Arrangement pitches up the action with new backgrounds and a story them taking you to the planet Galaga, plus more tuned difficulty settings for even challenge, battles against massive and creative bosses, and a 2-4 player multiplayer mode where gamers blast away for the highest score ranking. New Rally-X Arrangement redoes the graphics in top-down 3D and adds tons of new level challenges such as grade separations and jump ramps, plus a 2-player mode on multiple stages where racers speed around to collect the most flags and fuel, blasting smokescreen attacks to knock flags off opponents. Dig Dug Arrangement has more complex levels, more even challenge for players to get deeper into the game, a detailed graphical update, and a 2-player co-op mode where teammates will be rivals for high scores but must still work together to progress and not lose any of their shared extra lives (even if it really is fun to pop your friends).

There's no word on a US release for this package yet, but Namco Museum will be released in Japan on February 24th at a budget price of 3,800 yen if you're itching for the import. We have some of the tiny screens from Namco's site (why do Japanese publishers always insist on tiny screens?), and will be updating you on more about Namco Museum as soon as we find a quarter in our pocket for another credit.
