Let me just say, first of all, that this game has absolutely STUNNING graphics. If you want a good game to show off the power of the PSP, this one would CERTAINLY suffice. The world is rendered in extremely well-realized, flawless 3D, with some of the nicest 'perspective' shots I've ever encountered (walking around at the edges of the big cliff the first town is situated on is just... gorgeous!). The 2D characters sprites mesh nicely with the 3D world, and even have human-shaped shadows instead of circles (one of my pet peeves for newer systems, which Falcom has yet to let me down on). (: And the level of detail is VERY high, complete with subtle, realistic lens flare (not overdone, though), as well as subtle shadows of clouds as they pass overhead (so subtle that you might not notice them at first, but they add IMMENSELY to the gorgeous look of this game). The music, too, is all very rousing and grand -- stereotypical RPG music, but WELL-WRITTEN music, played either by a real orchestra, or by some really excellent synth that's virtually indistinguishable from a real orchestra.
The game itself plays well, with battles that don't really offer anything new, but are fun nonetheless, if only because of their somewhat hands-off nature. Your only commands when you first enter battle are 'offensive' or 'defensive' -- after that, all of your party members hack and slash at all of the enemies in real-time until one or the other dies... and during that time, you can select a party member, bring up a menu, and use an item or special ability if you wish... but if all you want to do is fight, you can just let the battle play itself out. Some people have complained about the loading times for battle, but I think the only reason for that is because Gagharv's battles actually pop 'Now Loading' up on the screen before each battle, whereas other games with similar pre-battle delays (such as the PS1 Final Fantasy games) just went blank, or zoomed around the battlefield a bit. This game's battles definitely take no longer to load than those did, and I don't really find the loading times to be that bad at all.
Getting down to the meat and potatoes of the game, though -- the story and characters -- I can definitely say that this game is going to be a lot of fun to play. (: The characters are all charming and likeable, and you get a really good feel for their personality, even at this early stage in the game. The story, too, is very modest and small thus far, but offers that sort of very dear, very charming feel that Falcom is known for. It's not about rushing off to save the world from bad guys (yet, anyway)... it's just about two kids who have 'come of age'... and in keeping with their village's traditions, must now go on a 3-month pilgrimage to see the 5 'magic mirrors' located in shrines around the world, to prove that they are now adults. Every person who lives in their village has passed this traditional ritual of adulthood, and each one of them took the village's very distinctive sword with them... a sword which serves as a sign that the bearer is on this pilgrimage, and which is honored at most inns and ferries around the world, allowing for free room and board, or free passage to the appropriate area. |
