An early version of the PSP's U.S. instruction manual has hit the web. The FCC, a U.S. governmental agency dealing with communications and electronics, is currently hosting four documents which are marked 'PSP Instruction Manual: Tentative.' The documents appear to be completely legitimate, if not final. Placeholder screenshots in the documents are in Japanese, for example.
According to the first document, the PSP will be available in the U.S. in a setup identical to the 'Value Pack' found in Japan. Included in the 'Value Pack' is the PSP unit, the rechargeable battery and AC adaptor, headphones with remote control, wrist strap, pouch, and 32MB Memory Stick Duo. 'UMD Software' and a 'cloth' are also included--the former obviously a demo disc, and the latter presumably for wiping down the system's screen, neither of which appeared in the box in Japan. (A PSP demo disc was available at Japanese launch, but it was a preorder bonus given separately at selected retailers.)
What has been causing the most concern amongst forum pundits is the system's purported region coding. The manual reconfirms that the PSP has region coding on UMD movie discs, which some are interpreting, along with a '2' mark found on all Japanese PSP games, as an indication that the PSP will be locked out for games, contrary to earlier quotes from such sources as Sony Computer Entertainment America's Molly Smith.
We contacted a Sony spokesperson for the scoop. As previously stated, PSP games are, by default, region free. Movies, on the other hand, will be region coded. Region coding is possible for game software, but thus far, no games released in Japan have been coded. It is currently thought unlikely that U.S. games will be coded--according to the spokesperson, all the U.S. games shown at the recent Consumer Electronics Show were running on Japanese PSPs. |
