1) What will the story for this GOW be?

CoO takes place in the ten-year span in which Kratos is serving the gods of Olympus. Kratos used to be the leader of Sparta’s army, until he fought a battle he could not win against the barbarians. He sold his soul to Ares, to ensure his survival, and Ares gifted him with Blades of Chaos, which served as a sign of his newly gained power and servitude to the god of war. Kratos lost every shred of his humanity while serving Ares, killing many innocents in the name of the god of war. Eventually, Ares tricked Kratos into killing his own family, and this was a loss that was too great for Kratos to bear. To seek atonement, Kratos decides to serve the other gods of Olympus, with Athena acting as his patron goddess. Kratos served the gods for ten years until he was finally able to kill Ares and become the new god of war. It is during those ten years that CoO takes place. Reportedly Kratos will venture into the underworld, even going so far as to Tartarus itself. Kratos will have to battle Greek mythology’s greatest monsters and he must choose between his atonement and the security of the entire world.

2) Who is Ready at Dawn?

They are the developers for CoO and their previous project was Daxter. RaD is comprised of ex-Naughty Dog members as well as members from Blizzard Entertainment. Ru Weerasuriya, the director of CoO, was, in fact, the senior artist of Blizzard. RaD is what you would call a second party developer. Sony, technically, does not own them, yet they work for Sony on their own free will. RaD could work on any platform, if they wanted to, but they seem to wish to stick to the PSP. In fact, RaD asked for permission to create Daxter and CoO, meaning it was their own decision, not Sony’s, to make these two games, meaning they were not called upon by anyone to make anything.

3) What is Santa Monica Studios involvement in the development of CoO?

Santa Monica Studios is overlooking the development of CoO. Right now, the programmers and combat director (who pretty much built Kratos’ combat from scratch) are working directly with the developers at RaD. Mostly what’s going on is RaD asks for a bit of assistance when a problem arises or when they are not quite sure how to do something. Cory Barlog, the director of GOWII, is the director of the entire franchise, meaning he is currently overseeing every aspect of CoO’s development.

4) When was CoO announced?

Gamers first knew of CoO when they saw an ad for it on the back of GOWII’s manual (although its name was not yet known). Its official announcement was a teaser trailer that was first viewed on islandofrhodes.org (this is also when gamers finally figured out its name). Island of Rhodes is revealed to gamers when the combo counter in GOWII reaches 999000 (here is a video showing us this action in progress: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C22cgOvxTXY). When anyone ever tried to visit the site, all they would have seen was a counter counting down to April 11-12. Once the site was finally up and running, we were all treated to some developer commentary and puzzles that drew us deep into the rabbit hole. After solving a puzzle, someone accessing the site would be brought to the next page, which had more videos, and another puzzle. Eventually, after all three puzzles were solved, we finally learned about the secret HD mode that was hidden in GOWII and we were treated to another countdown that would not end until April 25. Once this countdown ended, we were all able to see the teaser for CoO. This is what is known as taking the gaming experience beyond the game.

Here is a video of the teaser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJrTVg-TG_M

5) How much of the PSP’s power will CoO use? RaD will be using about 80% of the PSP’s power for CoO. This should excite gamers, because they only used 50-60% of the PSP’s power for Daxter (which looks and plays almost like a PS2 game). It should be noted that developers never use 100% of any systems’ power because they always find new ways to optimize hardware use.

6) Will battery power be a problem?

It might, but this all depends on how fast the PSP’s CPU is working and how much data needs to be streamed off of the UMD. The top speed for the PSP’s CPU is 333-MHz, but most games have the CPU going at somewhere in the 200-range. More battery life is consumed as the CPU starts going faster, and rather advanced games will necessitate a quick CPU speed. Luckily, the PSP has a reconfigurable assistant chip that helps conserve battery life. Typically, it is games that have constant streaming that consume the most battery life. In several games, the developers do not know the exact details of what gamers are looking at or of what they are doing, meaning a lot has to be streamed off of the disc at a consistent rate. What aids GOW in this department is its camera system. Thanks to the non-controllable camera, the developers will know exactly what gamers are looking at, meaning they will know what to render and what does not need rendering. In GOW, areas that you have left, which are areas that the camera will not point towards, are replaced with areas that are directly ahead of you, in the system’s memory. The developers know the exact times in which streaming is necessary.

7) Does anyone have the demo?

As of this moment, no, but the demo will be coming out in a few months. The full game will come out sometime in early 2008. This leads us to our next question…

8) Where did those videos of the demo come from?

If no one has the demo, where did these videos of the game’s intro come from? The videos come from a demo that was shown (not played) during Sony’s Gamers Day event. During this event, Sony displayed many of its games, including CoO, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk, etc. Unfortunately, no one was able to play the demo, so no one knows how it feels to play the game. Thankfully, we will all find out soon enough, thanks to a little e-mail from Sony…

9) What’s the deal with the e-mail from Sony? The e-mail from Sony was sent to those who signed up for the demo in late April, and it gives an official date for when the demo will be shipped. Those who signed up for the demo should receive it in September. Apparently, the demo that is being mailed directly to gamers from Sony is a special edition version. Ru Weerasuriya has stated that those who have received this e-mail will also receive exclusive bits of info coming directly from RaD.

10) Is this game coming out for any other platform?

I will only say this once: NO. This game is being published by Sony, and Sony owns the rights to GOW. CoO will likely not be ported to the PS2, because what will the point of buying a PSP be if any PSP game that’s worth owning gets ported to the PS2? Sony, while wanting to offer gamers a quality product, will do what is financially best for them. While another GOW on the PS2 will sell well, GOW will be the perfect franchise that Sony can use to encourage gamers to buy a PSP. Next to Gran Turismo, GOW is Sony’s biggest franchise. The PS2 has already had two helpings of GOW, so it is time for the PSP to have a share of some of the love.

11) What’s that thing on Kratos’ arm? Here is a screenshot showing the “thing” that is on Kratos’ arm: http://www.1up.com/do/slideshow?pager.offset=0&;mt=0&cId=3157271&mId=3297543 As far as anyone can tell, it is a shield. Currently, its use and importance are unknown. It could be just an ordinary shield, or it could offer Kratos some sort of extra ability. As of this moment, it is merely the subject of speculation. Here is another screenshot of Kratos with his “shield,” but in a different location: http://www.1up.com/do/slideshow?pager.offset=0&;mt=0&cId=3157271&mId=3301839

12) Will there be a new sex minigame?

There might be and there might not be. RaD could decide to keep up with tradition and include a minigame, or they might decide that they do not need it. Either way, CoO should be fine.

13) Does this have anything to do with GOWIII?

The short answer to this question is “yes.” Barlog has stated that every GOW will connect into an overarching story, meaning CoO will have an affect on every GOW title. Specifically, CoO will be dealing with what’s left of Kratos’ humanity. In the beginning of his servitude, Kratos has some hope that he will finally be freed from his nightmares, but, over time, this hope is thwarted, thanks to the gods. It seems as though we will start to see Kratos harbor his inner dislike for the gods that was seen at the end of GOWII. We will see the seeds of the hatred that causes Kratos to gain the desire to kill every Olympian at the end of GOWII (which would also be the beginning of GOWIII).

14) Will Atlas be involved in the story of CoO?

In GOWII, it is implied that Kratos is the one responsible for giving Atlas his punishment of holding the Earth (in the original mythology, he holds the sky and was given this punishment immediately after the Great War was lost). Kratos could have done something to Atlas in the ten-year period of serving the gods, but that does not guarantee that Atlas will be in CoO. It is unknown if CoO will cover the entire ten-year span, meaning Atlas could appear in another possible prequel. Kratos could have also done something to Atlas during the period in which he was the god of war.

15) Will Kratos’ brother make an appearance in CoO?

Probably not, since none of GOW1’s extras movies are actually canon. They were merely speculations of the various directions the series might take in the future. So far, the developers have gone with the “get revenge against Zeus” direction in GOWII, and this direction was hinted at in the video “A Secret Revealed.” Here is a video of the above-mentioned GOW1 extras movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGayzcSbNvk Here is a video of “Birth of the Beast” (which is where Kratos’ brother is first mentioned): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUOQ0DudU7Q

16) What will Gaea’s role be?

She will, most likely, be the narrator. In GOWII, it is implied that Kratos has met Gaea for the first time, meaning she will not actively communicate with him or offer him aid in CoO, which is set before both of the previous GOW titles.

17) What Greek heroes could CoO have in it?

CoO could have a variety of famous Greek characters for Kratos to fight, but there are a few limitations on who Kratos can and cannot encounter. For example, Kratos cannot fight Heracles, because Perseus is his maternal great-grandfather. Theseus appears near the bottom of his family tree, meaning a fight against some of his ancestors is possible, including a possible fight against Pelops. Fortunately, the developers are not following a specific timeline for several of Greek mythology’s mythical families, meaning it is all up to your imagination when it comes to thinking about the possible fights Kratos could have. As a matter of fact, thanks to a few contradictions in the myths, coming up with an absolute timeline for all of Greek mythology is impossible. There is also no need to worry about the developers running out of characters from the mythology to use. If the developers do run out of heroes for Kratos to fight, they would likely be merely popular characters. There are plenty of lesser-known characters in the more obscure myths that could be used.

18) Will Kratos have any special abilities?

There is always the possibly of Kratos having some magical abilities (you can spot a magic meter in the teaser) or special items (such as the shield shown in section 11). The problem with this is that the developers will have to come up with an explanation for why Kratos does not have these abilities in GOW1 (which takes place at the end of the ten-year span, and chronicles his final task). The one thing we do know Kratos will have would be the Blades of Chaos. According to Barlog, nearly all of Kratos’ basic abilities will be making an appearance.

19) Will anything need to be watered down?

According to Barlog, nothing will be watered down. Barlog has specifically stated that CoO will be as big and as epic as any console GOW. It will have the same big intro, the same sense of scale, the same high quality cutscenes, the same fast-paced gameplay, the same mind-blowing boss fights, the same fully orchestral soundtrack, the same complex puzzles and exploration, and the same engaging setting.

20) Why is Kratos fighting Persians?

Historically, Persians and Greeks have not gotten along so well. In the past, at least two of the historical Persian empires have attempted to invade and conquer Greece (it should be noted that each empire is divided by time, and after one empire died out, another took its place). Since Kratos is serving the gods of Greece, it would make sense that they do not want their lands invaded by outsiders. In the intro, Kratos is fighting off Persians who are attempting to invade Attica. Here is a video of CoO’s intro: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=198M80KLhYQ

21) What is that monster that Kratos is fighting?

The monster that Kratos is fighting (which ate the Cyclops that originally wanted to fight CoO’s lead character) is likely a dragon. There were, in fact, several dragons in Greek mythology. Heracles is known for killing Ladon, which was a hundred-headed dragon, during his Twelve Labours. Kratos’ clash with the dragon is much like his first battle with the Hydra, but this is only his first encounter against the beast, and he will likely fight it several times all throughout the intro. Here is a video showing Kratos fighting the first boss in CoO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meb-xfDFdKg

22) What is the title’s meaning?

“Chains of Olympus” could refer to a physical object, or it could have a symbolic meaning. Right now, only the developers know the meaning of the title. All we can do, at this moment, is speculate.

23) Will there be multiplayer?

No, this will be a strictly single-player experience, director’s orders.

27) Special thanks

I would like to thank Pastehunter and Anynonymous3 for helping me gather questions, endersgame33 for giving me some valuable sticky information, xtuffnbuffx for providing useful background information, Sanjoken for being the first to mention the e-mail from Sony, and every user who has ever asked a question.

28) Public Message

I would just like to repeat that this is a continuous help topic and that I, as well as a few others, will continuously answer all (relevant) questions that are asked. Before asking a question, I beseech you to first read all of the questions that have already been answered, so you do not accidentally repeat a question that somebody else asked before you. Other than that, never feel ashamed to ask a relevant question, for it is only when you ask questions that you receive answers, and everyone deserves a good answer.
