Both a federal holiday and a state holiday in all states, it is celebrated on the same day as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day in other parts of the world, falling on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. In den USA hieß der Freitag ursprünglich Armistice Day (Tag des Waffenstillstandes) und wurde zu Ehren der Amerikaner begangen, die am Ersten Weltkrieg teilgenommen hatten. Heute ist er ein Gedenktag zu Ehren aller Kriegsveteranen aus allen Kriegen, an denen die Vereinigten Staaten beteiligt waren.
Kriegsveteranenverbände veranstalten Paraden oder andere spezielle Feierlichkeiten, und der Präsident oder andere hohe Regierungsvertreter legen am Grab des Unbekannten Soldaten auf dem Arlington National Cemetery einen Kranz nieder.
Le Jour du souvenir (en anglais Remembrance Day), aussi connu comme Jour de l|armistice, est une journée de commémoration annuelle observée en Europe et dans les pays du Commonwealth pour commémorer les sacrifices de la Première Guerre mondiale ainsi que d|autres guerres. Cette journée a lieu le 11 novembre pour rappeler la signature de l|armistice mettant fin à la Première Guerre mondiale, en 1918.
Par tradition, il y a deux minutes de silence à 11h, le 11e jour du 11e mois parce que c|est à ce moment-là que l|armistice a été effectif.
Coquelicot à l|Australian War MemorialDans les pays du Commonwealth, le coquelicot est un symbole associé à la mémoire de ceux qui sont morts à la guerre. Le jour du souvenir y est l|occasion de ventes de coquelicots en papier au bénéfice des anciens combattants.
