Rumormill: Industry Hearsay: 07.19.04

There are always rumors, but industry hearsay is more than a rumor. It could be fact, or it could be fiction.
Welcome to our first Industry Hearsay Rumor Mill. We hear things under the table all the time, but usually you need to take things with a grain of salt. However, sometimes juicy tidbits that pass by just need to be typed up and handed off to all of you. So without further ado, we present a nice helping of next generation hearsay.
PlayStation 3 Unveiling - Clarified
By now you all know that Sony has started up the hype engine soon to be known as the PlayStation 3. Before we get into Namco?s plans with the PS3, let?s first clear up all the hearsay that?s been buzzing around the industry. Many sites and message boards have been blowing up with reports that Sony will unveil their next console before the end of 2004. Now this is true, but not in the way many sites are reporting. The graphic Sony showed at their recent event in Japan indicated the PS3 would be unveiled around the end of Fiscal Year 2004. That means sometime in the area of March 2005. So don?t get your hopes up for a December unveiling of the PS3 because it isn?t happening.
Namco?s PS3 Plans
Namco launched the original PlayStation with Ridge Racer and Tekken. The company launched the PS2 with Ridge Racer V and Tekken Tag Tournament. Ridge Racer and Tales of Eternia will launch with the PlayStation Portable. And when the PlayStation 3 arrives, Namco will be there with more launch goodness.
First let?s break down the bad news. Soul Calibur 3 will not launch with the PlayStation 3. Sorry SC fans, the arcade version might be out by then, but it?s almost certain the home version will still be a ways off. What Namco fans can expect is a new installment in the Tekken series either based off the upcoming movie or using an upgraded Tekken 5 engine. We?ve heard the words Tekken Tag Tournament 2 come up, along with Tekken 5.5 (the original Tekken Tag Tournament was originally known as Tekken 3.5). Sources close to Namco have confirmed that the new title will be the first fully online Tekken. That means the PS2 release of Tekken 5 (assuming there still is one) will not have online play. Hey, you can?t have good news without bad news right?
Preliminary Xbox 2 Launch Lineup
You can?t talk about PlayStation 3 launch plans without bringing up the supposedly leaked Xbox 2 launch lineup right? A little bird has told us that Rare is currently working on three Xbox 2 titles, with plans to release two at launch, and the third within six months of launch. What are the titles? Unfortunately, we couldn?t get that information, but if we had to take an educated guess, Perfect Dark and Killer Instinct would be launching with the new machine, while a new platformer/adventure (Banjo? Ghoulies II?) would follow six months later. In addition, EA has moved their recently delayed Battlefield: Modern Combat to the Xbox 2, and also has plans to release the standard issue sports games alongside the console. What?s the word from Bungie? Nothing yet, but stay tuned.
Capcom?s Next Fighting Game Series
The creator of the Street Fighter series recently left Capcom. However, that doesn?t mean the fighting game series that started it all is over and done with. A new Street Fighter title is in the works over at Capcom. Contrary to popular belief, development has just begun on the title, with an estimated Summer 2006 release date. So all of those rumors you heard about Street Fighter IV coming two years ago, were completely false. Very little info is known about the new title, other than the fact that it will remain 2D.
EA Online Fees for Next Gen Gaming
We?ve all heard the rumblings that Electronic Arts would start charging for online privileges in their popular sports titles. However, come next generation, the speculation will become a reality. According to company insiders, EA will charge an unknown, yearly premium that will cover all of their online games. There?s no information on what the charge may be, or if it will cover all next generation consoles, including the PC, but a charge is coming people.
Advent Children Double Pack
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is arguably the biggest Final Fantasy property currently in development. With an upcoming DVD and PlayStation Portable UMD release, Square Enix has interesting plans for their latest CG movie. Since it seems almost common knowledge that Western gamers and movie goers will not buy two copies of the same movie without some incentive, Square Enix has released plans to offer a bundle pack of sorts at major retail chains in the US. While the UMD and DVD versions will remain separate purchases, buying both formats of the movie will provide a $5 cash back rebate. In addition, buying Final Fantasy XII with the UMD will garner a $10 cash back rebate. Until we know the confirmed price of the UMD format, these rebates may not be much, but we?ll wait and see what else Square Enix has up their sleeves.
