Got some old friends you’d like to get into Dueling, again?
Get ready for Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG Genesys!
Genesys is a fully supported tournament system we’ve been working on for over 2 years, that you can now play at your local Official Tournament Store, and soon at the YCS level! (And a lot of Duelists have already played it – all of the Rivalry of Warlords Decks at the World Championship Qualifier were actually Genesys Decks. Surprise!)

Rules
Genesys uses the same rules as standard Duels, with a few simple changes to Deck construction:

1. No Link or Pendulum Monsters are allowed, and the old game field is used (so no Extra Monster Zones or Pendulum Zones).
2. All other cards are allowed. There is no Forbidden & Limited List.
3. Deck construction uses a point system! Some (powerful) cards have a point cost when building your Deck; most cards cost no points. Each Duelist will have the same number of points to build their Deck. This brings the power ceiling on Decks down for everyone and focuses Duels on battle action.
4. Tournament organizers can change the point cap for each event. Standard is 100 points, but you can do a 200-point event where people can have more power cards, or lower it to 50 (fewer power cards) or even zero (no power cards)! Whatever you want.

Who It’s For
Genesys was designed for everyone! But it’s mostly meant as a Big Tent to provide a good and fun home for all sorts of Duelists:
●Duelists looking for a less complicated game.
●Duelists who are new to the game.
●Duelists who have always had a favorite Deck, and want their favorite Deck to be a little more competitive.
●Anybody looking for a new experience or change of pace.
●Duelists who love love love a Deck-building challenge.
●Everyone who just can’t get enough Dueling!

What’s Next
We’re going to be in early access for a bit. During early access, we’ll have a browser-based Deck builder site to build your Deck List, have it count up your point cost and make sure your Deck is legal, and download a copy to print out and take to a tournament.
Official Tournament Stores can run officially-sanctioned Genesys events starting today!
After a couple weeks, we’ll start running Genesys Invitationals at major events like the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series.

Here’s how Genesys Invitationals will work:
●Multiple 16-player mini-tournaments will be run on Saturday.
●The 1st and 2nd place finishers in each of those get to play in the main Invitational held on Sunday of that event.
●We’ve dug into the vault for some special prizes to hand out, like original 2009 SJC Dark End Dragon prize cards, plus Giant Cards like a super-sized Pot of Greed!

Genesys Invitationals are planned for these upcoming YCS events:
October 4/5 – Anaheim, California, USA
October 11/12 – Sao Paulo, Brazil
November 8/9 – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
November 29/30 – Merida, Mexico

For Europe, Genesys kicks off with an Invitational at YCS Bologna on November 22/23. Stay tuned for full details when the YCS Bologna FAQ goes up!
And the first North American full-on Genesys YCS (where the main event itself will be Genesys format) is coming in 2026.
We’re going to talk a lot about Genesys and how it works in the days to come, with multiple articles here every day, so stay tuned!

Why Do a Point System at All?
You might be wondering why we’re adding a completely new style of Deck-building for Genesys. After all, Forbidden & Limited Card Lists have worked just fine for over 20 years. So let’s go over some of the ways it makes things different!

No Forbidden Cards
There’s no individual card in the game that’s so incredibly powerful that it can never be allowed. Not even long-time members of the Forbidden Cards List like Painful Choice.It’s not that it’s powerful by itself, it’s powerful because it lets you get other powerful cards. With Painful Choice sitting at a 95 point cost, you can’t really combo it with other power cards in Genesys. But if you really want to play with it, you can – it will just take up most of your Deck’s point budget by itself.

Specific Combos Can Be Priced Out
If a multi-card combo results in an undesirable interaction, like an FTK, it can be removed by just pricing the card most responsible at 100 points and the other needed components at 1 point. This puts the combo over the standard 100 point cap, so it can’t go in the same Deck.

But at locals or side events, the Tournament Organizer can set the point cap to whatever the players want it to be, so if you want to run a high-power tournament with a 500-point cap you’re free to do that and use those combos. (We’ll talk about multiple point cap variants in another article!)

You Can’t Put Every Single Power Card in Your Deck
With a point cap, there’s a real trade-off when deciding if you want to play extraordinarily powerful cards like Maxx “C” or Graceful Charity in your Deck. You can certainly do it, and you can play multiples if you want! However, if you do, you’re giving up other important tools your Deck might need in order to function, like cards that enable turn 1 interaction going second (Ash Blossom, etc.).

Do you really want to spend 50 points per Maxx “C”? Maybe! If the rest of your Deck is 0 cost and you’re confident the extra cards from it will surely let you win. Or you could spend 51 points and get full playsets of both Mulcharmy Fuwalos and Mulcharmy Purulia (3 copies of each). This is lower power, but you’ll see at least one of those Mulcharmy cards far more often than you would that single Maxx “C”, and it costs only 1 point more than playing a single Maxx “C”.

Another example, you could play 3 copies of Pot of Greed, if you want. (This card allows you to draw 2 cards from your Deck.) But at 30 points each, that will take 90 of your Deck-building points. The choice is yours!

More Choices to Make = More Fun For Deck-building Enthusiasts
For many Duelists, building Decks is the most fun part of the game! The point system in Genesys is similar to the salary cap system used by professional sports. Just like how individual players can earn a bigger payday and may take more of the cap to re-sign, the point cost of cards will change based on their usage and performance in competition. Genesys makes you the general manager of your own Deck, giving you much more to think about, and more reasons to use cards you might not consider otherwise! 我玩暗鸟：
1.雪击是手坑要5分我能理解，可在幻耀和黑旋风等展开件0分的情况下，魔风1张卡就20分（5分之一），精锐只能用1次且不像以前能别卡组出差的卡居然要15分？
2.rum本身没法1卡展开，可大量的rum只有1分但也是分（就因为防外神的100？那为什么不盯着个别rum给个5分？），那普通的【融合】为什么没有1分防禁卡？
别最后以为是平衡，可拼的还是谁自家t0展开，谁自家手坑多。

The initial points list was frozen at the end of August so we could focus on the Genesys launch without constant additional changes. So we’ve built up a bit of a backlog from further internal testing. And now your results will affect the points, moving forward!
Cards that universally see a ton of play will see their point costs go up. Cards that don’t see any play will often see their point costs come down. And of course we’ll always keep both hands on the steering wheel to make sure that no FTK combos creep in (even if nobody’s playing them – point decay is not automatic).

We’re thinking the ideal update timing is somewhere in the 4-6 weeks range, but that will depend on data availability. In order to see which cards are getting used (and not used), we need Deck Lists. We’ll have the Deck Lists from the big events that we’re running, like the Genesys Invitationals we’re running at upcoming YCS events. But we’re really hoping to see Deck Lists from in-store Genesys tournaments, Genesys public events run at Regionals, etc. Tournament organizers have never been required to send those to us, but you can help out too by talking about what cards you’re seeing (and are winning) at your local events. Just talk about it in the usual places. We’ll see it. If you can add #YGOGenesys to your posts, even better!
We’re also flexible on the update schedule. If you’d prefer a longer gap between changes, or updates only when new sets come out, we could do that too, if enough people want it.

Speaking of new sets, you’ll notice Dominus Spiral and K9-04 Noroi, from Doom of Dimensions, have immediate point costs. Existing “Dominus” cards already have point costs. Existing “K9” cards already have point costs. So we think Duelists would expect strong new cards from these lines to come with at least some nominal point cost upon release. This was also common feedback from the folks who had an early look at Genesys before it was announced.
But at the same time, we’re thinking it would be a little weird to pre-assign point costs to brand-new themes, like “DoomZ” or “Radiant Typhoon” (both from Doom of Dimensions) right away. Let’s see where they end up, first. Do you agree? Let us know!
Your first chance to talk to us directly about any of this will be at YCS Anaheim where the first Genesys Invitational and its qualifiers will be going on! We hope to see you there!

P.S. Whenever we update points, the Deck-builder web site will always have them first, and we’ll post an article here right away. The point list at the main Genesys page will probably lag behind a little bit. Don’t panic! And keep in mind we’re still in early access and are hoping to revamp this in the near future.

“Rokkets” return in Burst Protocol, along with the latest “Forbidden” Quick-Play Spell Card: Forbidden Crown!

Depicting the struggle of powers above and below, the “Forbidden” series of Quick-Play Spells started way back in 2009. Forbidden Crown is the sixth, and the one with the most effects (so far)!

As the saying goes, “heavy is the head that wears the crown.” The monster targeted by Forbidden Crown gets hit with ALL of these effects for the rest of the turn:
Its effects are negated.
It can’t attack.
It can’t be destroyed.
It’s unaffected by card effects – except its own.
It can’t be Tributed, or used as Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link Material.
And finally, neither player can use monster effects in response to the Crown to try and stop it.

Since the Crown, like all “Forbidden” Quick-Plays, can be used on either turn, you can use it on any monster, friend or foe, as offense or defense, depending on the situation. You can stop your opponent’s monster effects, disrupt their Summoning strategy by making a monster unusable as material, or make it indestructible while it’s stuck in Attack Position so you can run over it again and again to smash their Life Points. On the other hand, you can use it on your own monsters to protect them from enemy card effects, from being destroyed in battle, and from being used as material by your opponent. And since it opens so many possibilities, it’s a great card to Set if you’re going first, because it always has a great use.

It’s the Crown for every occasion!

And who knows the weight of the Crown better than Darklord Eveningstar? The Darklords are back! Use Darklord Dance to easily Fusion Summon Eveningstar (or any DARK Fairy) with materials from the hand, field, or Graveyard (or even use “Darklords” your opponent controls…) and boost his ATK by a thousand. Darklord Eveningstar Sets a “Darklord” Spell and a “Darklord” Trap from your Deck when he’s Summoned, and has the standard “Darklord” power to duplicate the effects of “Darklord” Spells and Traps in your Graveyard before shuffling them back into your Deck for re-use.

It’s a “Rokket” relaunch! Use the many powerful “Borrel” Link Monsters from Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS to fire off brand-new “Rokket” monsters inspired by Varis’ strategy from the anime! You can also add a new Link-5 “Borrel” Monster to your Extra Deck to go alongside your mighty Borrelend Dragon! Play your cards right and you may even be able to Summon both together!

If you missed out on Battles of Legend: Monster Mayhem, go back and grab the latest upgrade to Crowley (called “the Gifted Magistus”). That’s because Spenta, the Magistus Sealer will be debuting in Burst Protocol! But that’s not all, the electrifying Fusion Monster Invoked Magistus Omega is going to be in this absolutely explosive set, too!

Mercurium the Living Quicksilver is a Rank 10 Xyz Monster (Aqua/DARK/ATK 3000/DEF 3000) that attaches a monster from your Deck to itself as material when it’s Xyz Summoned. And while Mercurium has material, your opponent cannot activate any monster effects in their Graveyard, if you have a monster with that same Attribute in YOUR Graveyard. Mercurium needs to be kept fed with new materials to keep this effect going, but as long as you can keep him satisfied, you’ll be able to shut down your opponent’s key strategies!

It’s also that time again for a brand-new World Premiere theme! The scientists have been deep in the lab messing around with things that are probably better off left alone. What’s that? Scientists with dinosaurs? Okay, well, surely nothing can go wrong with their experiments…right…right?
