The Yu Gi Oh card game is not dead, stop over-reacting by DoctorNik
People are seriously over-reacting
I do not work for Upper Deck or Konami or have any contact with them but I can still tell you exactly what will happen because it is pretty obvious
Konami Digital Entertainment now owns the rights to creating, making, and tournament organizing of YGO cards worldwide (in addition to the video game rights)
They still do NOT own the YuGiOh brand. Shuesha/Shonen Jump still does.
Upperdeck will have pretty much no involvement in YGO anymore
The lawsuit will not change anything. The only thing it can change is make konami's pockets a little lighter and UDs a little heavier. UDE is simply looking for compensation for breach of contract. They have no claim to ownership of YGO.
As for the game, there will be an adjust period as KDE takes over operations. I would expect that several of the UDE YGO staff are relocated to KDE since it is much cheaper to rehire than to retrain staff. Internal restructure will likely be shuffling personnel rather than a huge overhaul.
During this readjustment, several things will be frozen, including organized play prize support (hence regionals being cancelled) and possibly brand/ marketing. Hopefully, distribution should be a smooth transition, since production of YGO cards will continue regardless of distributor rights. I would imagine that product is made accessable during this time, since companies kinda like making money.
Non-prize supported tournaments, such as locals, will not be affected.
Then when KDE is ready, they will create a new organized play program. Chances are they will model it after UDEs since it was fairly successful. That would mean that regionals and nationals would be pretty much the same.
A big uncertainty would be the Shonen Jump Championships, since as the name implies, are influenced by Shonen Jump/Shuesha involvement. If anything, I believe that Konami has a BETTER relationship with Shuesha than UDE ever did and there is a strong possibility that Konami CAN continue the series. The question is, will they want to, since many people from UDE have claimed that the tournaments operate at a significant loss and they were holding this series as a reward to players. Konami may be more profit oriented.
So whats likely going to happen:
-YGO cards will still be on shelves
-locals will continue as is
-regionals may be cancelled for a few months
-SJCs may be in limbo
-the world keeps turning
So if you want to sell off your cards, go for it. Most of you will be buying them back in 3 months.
